Women are now advised to get a mammogram every other year starting at age 40 and until age 74, according to new recommendations from a medical panel. The previous recommendations suggested that biennial mammograms start at age 50 and screening in the 40s should be an individual decision. The updated recommendations apply to all individuals assigned female at birth, including those with a family history of breast cancer or dense breasts. The recommendations do not apply to individuals with a personal history of breast cancer or those at high risk due to genetic markers or radiation therapy. The updated guidelines aim to reduce breast cancer deaths and offer a more favorable balance of benefits and harms.
