In Naples, Florida, a family recently had a close call when a piece of space debris crashed through their roof. The incident highlights the need for sustainable space practices and a shift away from the current paradigm of launching and abandoning satellites. Advocates for a circular space economy argue for designing satellites with reuse and recyclability in mind. Instead of leaving defunct satellites in orbit or allowing them to fall unpredictably to Earth, controlled reentry procedures should be adopted. The European Space Agency is leading the way in implementing circular economy principles, and NASA should follow suit to ensure a more sustainable future in space exploration.
