Millions of people have long Covid, including children and pregnant people, studies show
Millions of individuals continue to experience long-lasting symptoms of Covid-19. Two recent studies provide insights into the underrecognized burden of this health issue. The first study focused on pregnant individuals and revealed that 1 in 10 of those who had Covid-19 during pregnancy developed long-term symptoms, with tiredness and dizziness being the most common. Another study found that up to 6 million children have developed long Covid, with a third experiencing symptoms even a year after their initial infection. The research also indicated a higher risk of autoimmune conditions in children, such as type 1 diabetes, following Covid infection. While the number of patients seeking treatment for long Covid in pediatric clinics has decreased, there is still a significant demand for care.
