Is Covid-19 on the rise? What to do about the summer wave
Covid-19 Infections on the Rise in the United States #
Emergency department visits for Covid-19 have been increasing in the United States, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Data from the most recent week shows a 23.5% rise in emergency visits related to Covid-19 compared to the previous week. The CDC also reports a high national level of viral activity in wastewater. The surge in infections is attributed to increased travel and indoor gatherings during the summer. Experts advise vulnerable individuals, such as the older or immunocompromised population, to ensure they are vaccinated and take additional precautions like masking in crowded spaces. Rapid antigen home tests are considered convenient but less accurate than laboratory PCR testing. Travelers are recommended to wear N95 masks in crowded and poorly ventilated areas, consider outdoor dining, and have a plan in case of infection. There is a new formulation of the Covid-19 vaccine expected to be available soon, but it is recommended that everyone over the age of 6 months receives a vaccine as per CDC guidelines. Individuals diagnosed with Covid-19 should stay at home until they are fever-free for 24 hours and their symptoms are improving. Additional precautions should be taken during the following five days, such as wearing masks and limiting close contact. Vulnerable individuals in the household should be avoided until the person tests negative for Covid-19. Overall, while some individuals can resume normal activities, those at higher risk should take extra precautions, and those around them should also support their protection.
