The ongoing excavation of an ancient Greek city in western Turkey has revealed artifacts and archaeological remains dating back to the fifth century BC. Among the finds is a pot filled with a number of valuable gold coins that had been hidden for over 2,000 years. The discovery was made in Notion, an 80-acre fortified city that existed from the sixth century BC to the first century AD. The hoard of coins, buried beneath the floor of a fifth century BC courtyard house, may shed light on the life of an ancient mercenary soldier during that era.
